Time For A New Heart

For most of us, our schedules have opened up.  I have never seen my calendar so empty.  So now we are trying to figure out how to fill up the time and space.  What a sharp contrast to how we normally live.  During our normal lives how often have we longed for a day with nothing to do, a day where we could sit and just be still.  How often have we longed for a day to simply be with our family?  During this Covid-19 crisis we finally have those things for which we have longed.

We have more time to invest in family and we also have more time to grow deeper in our relationship with God.  Have you had days or maybe even weeks that have been so busy that you have not sat down and had intentional time with God?  Maybe your work schedule demands that you get up at 5:00 am and you don’t get home from work until 6:00 pm.  Then it is time for dinner and getting the kids to bed and then you are exhausted and fall into bed yourself or fall asleep on the couch watching TV.  We have become so busy that God has gotten crowded out of our schedule.  We have gotten out of the habit of time with God.

Can I encourage you to use this time to build new habits?  If your schedule is less busy the excuses are gone.  These times will test our hearts.  We have said that we have a heart to spend more time with God but we just don’t have the space in our schedules. Now we do have space in our schedules – are we pursuing after God?  Do you long to have a heart like King David?  He describes his heart for God in Psalm 27:4.

One thing have I asked of the Lord,
    that will I seek after:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord
and to inquire in his temple.

O Lord, may these words be a reflection of our own hearts.  If you had the opportunity to ask just one thing of God would your request be the same as David’s? When you wake up in the morning is the beauty of God what you desire to have fill your eyes and minds?  If this is not our desire there is a simple prayer you can pray.

“Lord, change the desire of my heart.  Create in me a greater desire for you.”

Once you pray this prayer – begin to behave as if this is your desire.  You do this by creating habits and patterns in your life that reflect a heart that passionately pursues after God.  Now is the time.  Don’t put it off.  Use the extra time you have right now to lean into God and pursue after Him.

I want to provide a tool for you to help you build the practice of daily time with God into your life.  I also want to train you in what to do to make the most of these times with God.

Here is what you can do. I will be providing daily devotional videos.  (Right now I will be putting up videos for 5 days a week.)  I want you to interact with the video.  You will want to have a Bible, pen and paper in front of you as you begin the video.  We will be learning together from God’s word on a daily basis.  My prayer is that during these times God will be developing new habits and a new heart within you as we seek the Lord together.

There are several ways to view the devotional videos.

We grow deeper when we grow together.
